What’s On in Surrey & Surrounds: Plan your Leisure Diary for the Month Ahead!

The beauty of living in Surrey is that there is always so much going on throughout the county, and the close proximity to the Capital just adds to the leisure and entertainment possibilities.

There is plenty to do and see over the coming months whether you’re looking for family activities or refined entertainment. So we thought we’d list a few of what look like the most interesting for you right here, giving you the opportunity to plan your leisure diary for at least the month ahead.

For Dance Devotees: Brendan Cole

Dance legend Brendan Cole will host a brand new show for 2017 on 2nd February at the  G Live in Guildford. Featuring guest dancers and a 14-piece band and live singers, the show is billed as a spectacular event boasting amazing special effects, stunning lighting and superb choreography. Sounds like it’s not to be missed! Runs from 8pm to 10.15pm.

For Would-Be Wildlife Photographers: Winter Wildlife Photography Course

On 3rd February from 10am to 4pm the WWT London Wetland Centre in Barnes will offer wildlife buffs a golden opportunity to learn how to photograph the wonders of the wetlands in winter. Practical guidance and tuition is included from wildlife photographer Iain Green. Suitable for novice to intermediate photographers, the tuition will be tailored to suit and there will be plenty of time for one-on-one sessions.

For Nature Admirers: Orchids Galore at Kew Gardens

This year’s orchid bonanza at Kew Gardens in Richmond is centred on the sights and sounds of India. Built around gigantic floral displays, life-size peacock and elephant figures and decorative rickshaws, there is lots more to this event than an exhibition. Get involved in hands-on workshops, behind-the-scenes tours and tips from experts on growing your own exotic orchids. Plus there’s the chance to enjoy some delicious Indian cuisine in the cafes! The exhibition runs from 4th to 5th February and there’s a one-day course on 21st February costing £70 (£60 for members) which is where you’ll get your expert tips.

For Satirists: Brexit the Musical

There’s no denying that the Brexit decision brought with it a wave of mayhem and debate. And where there’s mayhem and debate, there is of course scope for a musical. Well, why not? Brexit the Musical is billed as a romp through the fiasco and fallout from the June 2016 Referendum. Enjoy ‘wicked words and great songs’ it says as the likes of ‘Nigel Farage’, ‘Theresa May’, ‘David Cameron’ and ‘Boris Johnson’ strut their stuff on stage. Sounds like something not to be missed! Runs from 7th to 11th February at The Old Sorting Office Arts Centre in Barnes.

For Art Lovers: David Hockney at Tate Britain

From 9th February until 29th May Tate Britain is hosting an exhibition of David Hockney’s most famous works charting six decades of photography, video, drawing, print and painting. The gallery is extending its opening hours until 22.00 every Friday and 20.00 every Saturday to cope with anticipated high demand and advance booking is recommended. Tickets cost £19.50 and members enjoy free entry.

For Fashion Aficionados: London Fashion Week Festival

For anyone who has always harboured a desire to take a pew at a fashion show, or for those budding would-be stylists, London Fashion Week Festival has to be the must-go event of the year. A range of ticket packages are available for the event running from 23rd to 26th February at The Store Studios, 180 Strand WC2R.

For Royalists: Diana, Her Fashion Story

Tracing the evolution of the style of the Princess of the People, this exhibition and temporary garden at Kensington Palace will celebrate Diana’s life in fashion. Opens 24th February and entrance is included in the palace admission price.
